A new bike for a new friend

20 12 2009

I’ve always been big on volunteering my time.  The muscular dystrophy association, special olympics, american cancer society…. but when R came along, by personal time became all the more precious and I became a whole lot less willing to give it away.

Then, I learned about a Bi.g Bro.the.rs, B.ig S.ist.ers program that company partners with.  It is their site based program where the Bigs meet up with the Littles at the Littles’ school during lunch break.  So, every other Monday I trek to the other side of town during my lunch break to meet with P, my Little. My company continues to pay me for any time it takes over my regular lunch hour, and I get to spend a little bit of time each month hanging out with a pretty awesome 10-year-old.

The program is pretty awesome and I really enjoy getting to hang with this kid- even though she incessantly cheats at board games…  Haha.  Again, I am a veteran volunteer, so I am aware of how rewarding this kind of stuff is, but there is something that I am shocked by.  I am really surprised how excited P gets to see me.  We don’t really do anything cool other than play game or do homework or talk, but she is sincerely excited to see me and calls me frequently to find out when I am coming next.  I didn’t expect that.  I don’t know why, but I didn’t.

We met for the last time in 09 on Monday.  Last week,  I got a message from the program coordinator that facilitates the relationship between BB/BS and my company asking if I was available one afternoon.  I went to a business meeting for another unit in my company where they were doing a team building exercise where they built bikes.  Guess what they were doing with the bikes once they were built?  DONATING THEM TO THE PROGRAM.  I was so excited!  So, Monday I got to take this brand new pink and blue bike and surprise my Little with it.  It was one of the coolest things I have ever gotten to do.  She was so excited and she almost cried.  Talk about rewarding!!
